Many of us have an obsession with time. We hate to waste time, as when we have to wait. We want to use time effectively, as in time management.
But there’s a curious misunderstanding of what it means to waste time; and I suspect it has to do with our work and productivity values as well as with the imbalance between the Sacred Feminine and the Sacred Masculine in our time culture.
Is it a waste of time to store a wine to increase its flavor?
Is it a waste of time to wait for each process in the alchemy of cooking to take its course before proceeding to the next step?
Is it a waste of time to rest and sleep, so that we can renew our energies?
Is it a waste of time to take time to laugh and enjoy the company of loved ones?
Is it a waste of time to pray?
Is it a waste of time to meditate?
Is it a waste of time to empty your mind, so that it can be filled by the Divine?
On the other hand, in our obsession with using time effectively, we do things that are senseless.
Is it effective to use our cell phones to be in a constant chatter? Or would it be more effective to use that time to close our eyes and rest our mind and eyes or to reflect on a problem we want to solve?
Is it effective to spend the entire day dealing with problems and tasks? Or would it be more effective to set aside some time to strategize for long-term growth?
Is it effective to micro-manage? Or would it be more effective to hire the best in their field, have clear criteria and timelines and let them do their job?
Is it effective to spend your free time on the phone with friends or watching TV? Or would it be more effective to use some of that time for that dream you want to create, that one, the one you keep saying that you don’t have time to do?
Meditate on your myths and beliefs about time that are stealing time, power, energy and attention from you in the name of not wasting time.
