The Pregnant Lady who Forgot her Belly
When she Crossed the Street
NOTE: This is one of my Lifebites, a real-life life experience extracted as a Medicine Story to convey a life lesson.
She was in such a hurry that she crossed Manhattan’s East 97th Street after the semaphore’s light had turned red for her. Holding her big belly, she scurried across the street. She must have been about seven months pregnant.
I was strolling down 97th street with a friend, moving towards Madison Avenue, happily chatting after a delicious lunch. As we reached the avenue we got the green light and began to cross. We saw her as she launched forward.
I was stroke dumb in the middle of a sentence as my friend and I watched —our mouths wide open— what happened next.
A white paper flew from the binder that she held in her hands. Unthinkingly, she bent down to grasp it. Three things happened simultaneously then.
A car appeared from nowhere. Seeing that the light was green for him, the driver accelerated.
We gasped, and were sure that the woman must have seen the car, must know that she had crossed with a red light, must be getting up and hurrying out of the car’s way any second now. She must have!
