This is especially true for women, who for centuries have been denied a space in the world and still are denied their basic human and citizen rights in many parts of the world.
If you are fed up with playing small and committed to freeing yourself and expressing your full potential, then here’s a practice that can help you.
To occupy your space of power in the world, you do well to start with your physical space. You need to work on your stance. They way you stand reflects your stance in the world. Conversely, when you change the way you stand, your stance in the world changes.
To take that space back, here’s a Power Posture that takes you out of your Caterpillar Self (working hard underground and playing small) to free your Butterfly Self (radiant you expressing your unique gifts and talents in the world.)
Butterfly Stance
5 minute daily Power Posture practice
- Stand with your feet spread wide, parallel to your hips, and breathe slowly, deeply and easily for a minute, allowing the exhalation to be slower and take more time than the inhalation.
- Release your spine by making these four adjustments lovingly and gently:
- Bring your crown up to the sky, as if your crown was being pulled by a string
- Bring your sternum up to the sky, as if you were offering your breasts to the Goddess
- Adjust your chin to be parallel to the floor; neither pointing up or down. (This stretches the 7 vertebrae in the back of your neck) and finally
- Opening the area between your navel and your crotch vertically, as if making a clearance. This “uncrunches” your pelvic vertically and allows your “tail” to relax ~neither sticking out backwards or tucked between the legs, but resting comfortably. (See the correct posture on the side drawing and the two incorrect pelvic postures in the drawings below.)
- Inhale and place both your hands on your sternum, resting your palms lovingly on your breasts.
- Exhale and slowly, gracefully and lovingly bring your arms to the sides, as you allow your Essential Gifts to fly into the world. Feel their beauty showering the world. Enjoy the sense of expansion, giving and love as your arms stretch outward and occupy more space in the world.
- Stay there. Check your stance again. Keep your hips and legs wide, your spine vertically released and your hands gracefully expressing your Essence and lovingly sharing it with the world.
- Inhale again and feel all the space between the fingers of your left hand and your right hand. Truly feel that space and occupy it.
Your arms are spread wide, each hand is like the spot in this butterfly fore-wings. Your feet are wide apart, like the back wings of this radiant butterfly. Feel your brilliant colors. Bask on your the radiance of your own Divine Nature.
- Exhale and “dance” with your arms and hands, enjoying your wings and feeling yourself doing the butterfly flight. Enjoy the air under your wings and receive the support of the universe. Express your Essence with your hands, moving them spontaneously to express what you are feeling and your gifts.
- Inhale again and open the palms of your hands to receive what the Universe wants to give you back in exchange for your gifts. Bring your hands back towards your chest as you gather the energy that is coming back to you from the universe.
- With your palms on your breasts again, exhale as you allow all these energy to enter your heart and fill you with gratitude, fulfillment and the experience of your value in the world.
- Stay there, feeling joy, fullness and gratitude as you breathe gently, deeply and easily for a minute or two.
