I once met a young woman who told me that what she wanted most in the world was love. Life without being loved and loving back seemed empty to her.

It didn’t take long to observe that love was the very thing she rejected and resisted almost violently.

This blatant contradiction intrigued and horrified me. How was it possible that a human being so violently repelled what she so eagerly loved?

As we got to know each other, I realized something else: this woman did not believe it was possible for her to be loved.

“Why?” I wondered. She was brilliant, kind and funny and she was attractive enough. Nothing in her being seemed to make it impossible for her to be loved.

One day, in a conversation, I asked her why was she so skeptic about meeting a person who could love her.

“Who would love me?” she asked. The extreme loathe in her expression shocked me.

I asked her if she really thought that —in all objectivity— she was the ugliest, most unlovable woman in the world.

She considered it for a moment —and being a brilliant person— she shook her head. I could see that her mind acknowledged that there were lots of people “uglier” and less “worthy” of love than she was; while at the same time there was a part of her that not only was surprised by this observation, but violently resisted it.

I realized then that she felt that she did not deserve love.

When I dug a little deeper, I realized that she refused to admit to any of her virtues, as if this was more humiliating than her flaws. Her flaws she could admit to; but not her value.

When I dug a little deeper, I realized that she would never RECEIVE any of her blessings. She was always expecting less, expecting shortcomings, not able to believe more or better could ever come to her; not willing to be grateful for what she DID have.

When I dug a little deeper, I realized that she was so afraid of being rejected that she stopped herself from loving or showing any affection.

I learned then that you can only believe your dreams when you value and love yourself unconditionally and when you value and deeply receive the blessings you have been given.

Only then can you love and be loved.

Only then can you allow yourself to be successful.

Only then can you RECEIVE what you desire.

Because only then do you feel that you deserve it.

Everybody and their grandma is seeking outside validation and tools to manifest their dreams.
