When the myths and legends in your Family History are painful, limiting, fear-inducing and based on false beliefs, they can trap generations in the same limited beliefs. They can train you, your children and grandchildren in Primary Responses to life that are solely based on the fear of past generations and old, false assumptions. In this case, you need to change the stories you learned in order to break free from your Family Karma.
Human beings create myths and legends. We can’t avoid it. We are storytellers and story dwellers, and we try to make sense of things by telling stories.
One area where we tell stories to explain things is in our Family History. These stories we tell and repeat become the places where we dwell. They become family myths and legends that shape our emotions, interactions and our responses to life.
Family History then shapes and affects your Personal History.
All of this is natural, and leads to many valuable stories and memories that shape the character of generation after generation.
But when the myths and legends you are carrying are holding you back and transmitting limited beliefs to each generation, they become Family Karma. These stories trap you, your children and grandchildren and their children in limited responses, assumptions, expectations and interpretations of reality that keep repeating the past in the present and do not allow the family to evolve as a spiritual community.
Separating the wheat from the chaff
Part of the process of maturation is to examine your Family History and Personal History to learn the stories you were told and the stories you created to explain things that you may have not understood. In this process, you need to separate the wheat from the chaff. What is good, valuable and wise in these stories? What is limiting, fear-based and false in these stories?
You do well to examine those old family legends about how grandpa quit his job because his boss was a crook, as all bosses are. What is passed as a generalization or decree should sound your alarm.
You may want to examine the legend about how grandma responded to neighbors who were gossiping about the family by building a high fence. Defensive attitudes presented as solutions become Primary Responses that limit our relationship with the world.
You may want to then ask yourself how the next generations, and especially how YOU carry this legend as a map. Do you have a history of jumping from one job to the other? Are you hypersensitive to a boss’ instructions or bad moods? Do you constantly interpret your supervisors’ interactions as oppression, lack of respect or insults? Do you secretly dream of having a business, but dread becoming a boss because “all bosses are crooks”?
Are you always defensive about what people will say? Have you built emotional high fences against the world, seeing it as a hostile place? Do you constantly expect others to criticize or judge you? Do you have an “us versus them” mindset?
When you examine your Primary Responses to the world, you begin to see how those family legends have become your Family Karma, and how your Primary Identity has been warped by these legends, limiting your potential and distorting your ability to see the present as it is.
